We decided the best way to deal with that problem was to launch an upgradeable laptop at a substantial price premium, then provide no actual upgrades for it.” - Image by Dell, alternative caption by ExtremeTechĭeclaring that the use of a socketed Intel motherboard made the Area-51m “upgradeable” in some fashion now looks like the profoundly cynical move of a company that never intended to deliver what it promised. “Gamers have made it clear that they’ve noticed a lack of CPU and GPU upgradability in gaming laptops. The company communicated that it would provide further upgrades, and it knew damn well that “upgrade” is generally read to mean “components introduced after the laptop’s purchase date,” not “alternate hardware I could have bought at the time, but didn’t.” This was a laptop specifically and directly sold on the promise of offering a compatible platform for future hardware. I refuse to let Dell even a little off the hook for this. The answer? Even after promising customers that it would provide an “upgradeable” GPU, no, it wasn’t.

It’s a question of whether Dell was willing to commit to building a series of compatible custom GPUs over time, in order to provide the market with an actual upgrade path. This isn’t about whether the company was willing to build a custom GPU. Building a common laptop GPU card standard would allow a Dell Mobile (or what have you) RTX 2080 to be swapped for a Dell Mobile RTX 3080 or 4080 when the time came because all of these cards would use the same, Dell-designed form factor.ĭell is going to design custom mobile GPUs to fit its various XPS and Alienware laptops no matter what. What Dell promised to do last year, effectively, was to create one, specifically for its Alienware 51-m line of products. Laptop GPUs have to be built to very strict size tolerances, which is why there’s never been a single common standard. The reason laptop GPUs can’t be upgraded is that no OEM has ever felt it would be profitable to create and commit to supporting a platform for multiple product generations. The reason laptop graphics cards aren’t upgradeable has nothing to do with AMD, Nvidia, or the PCIe standard. You haven't mentioned that you ever got better then 20, so i can't really know if this would even help. This Has Always *Literally* Been the Problem (gearscore rant: Of course in the case of lol-gear score addon it was gonna cause problems, gear score also asked for so much information so frequently it was just dumb, badly coded addon, doing something bad).īut yeh, as he said, do try updating all your addons, remove those that haven't been updated for 4.0 and see how that works. Yes, there is a possibility that addons are causing problems. Not really sure what else could be the issue, tbh.Yeh, but what type of dual-core do you have? And on top of that, is running above what he stated? His is running at 2.0GHz, that is pretty slow, not to mention its a few gens old now, so the cores themselves aren't as strong in comparison to first gen i-series. Not really sure what else could be the issue, tbh. You can just turn off all your addons and see if it's fixed just to see if it's actually going to matter, but yeah.

Update all addons and drivers for your computer. I know when 4.0.1 hit Gearscore was making my frames drop by about 20 FPS. I have a dual-core and a 8800GT with 2.5Gbs of RAM and I can run Ultra at 40+. Other then that, pretty much all you can do is suffer through it.Įdit: 1 other thing would be to use lower settings, drop view distance and all the fancy extras. Only thing you can really do to try and help yourself is to regularly defrag, like once a week or so, to keep your HDD about as good as you can get it. WoW is a more CPU intensive games then most, as it has to read from the HD a lot more then other games do, a slow CPU coupled with an average HDD wouldn't help this and mean that you wouldn't be able to get decent FPS. You can't really OC laptops as they are usually already running hot and pushing them any more will just make them unstable and susceptible to crashes. I'm going to assume the reason is going to probably be something to do with the very slow CPU you have there (and possibly even a slow HD that wouldn't be helping the process).Īs i'm guessing by the fact you listed a battery that its a laptop, only thing you can really do on them to try increase performance is to always have it on high-performance settings while you playing games.
